Alhurra and Radio Sawa Bring the Moroccan Elections to Audiences Across the Middle East
Springfield, Va., Nov. 21, 2011 — Alhurra and Radio Sawa will provide extensive coverage of the Moroccan parliamentary elections on Friday, Nov. 25th. Alhurra’s live coverage will begin at 9 a.m. (all times Rabat time). Radio Sawa’s seven radio streams will expand their morning newscasts to get live updates from Morocco, as well as focusing on the issues that will influence voters’ decisions.
Alhurra’s correspondents will report live from Casablanca and Rabat, interviewing voters from polling stations in those cities. Alhurra’s coverage will also examine reforms initiated by the government and the call by some to boycott the elections, stating those reforms are not enough. Alhurra will also discuss the role of women in the Moroccan electoral process and the importance of religious freedom and tolerance. Alhurra will also broadcast special episodes of Equality and All Directions on Nov. 25th; addressing the rights of women in Morocco and an extensive discussion of the Morocco election from Middle East experts in the U.S.
Leading up to the Moroccan elections, Alhurra’s flagship program Al Youm will look at the impact the economy will have on the elections, as well as the role of the youth and their hopes for change in the North African country. On the night prior to the election, Al Youm will take to the streets to interview voters on their expectations the Election Day.
Radio Sawa’s coverage will compare and contrast the main political parties in Morocco. The radio network will also examine the changing of the guard as younger political leaders begin to take charge of political parties; as well as the fears of corruption in the electoral process.
