Last year, as Alhurra Television ramped up its coverage of the Egyptian revolution, it turned to veteran photojournalist Remi Ochlik to photograph the scene in Tahrir Square. His stunning images captured the human side of the uprising and the Egyptian people’s thirst for democracy. Above is a photogallery of that work.
Ochlik was killed February 22, while on assignment in Syria, where government forces rained bombs down upon the besieged city of Homs. Ochlik was among dozens of people reported killed in Homs, a center of opposition to President Bashar al-Assad. Reporter Marie Colvin of Britain’s Sunday Times also perished.
“Remi was an incredibly brave and talented photojournalist,” said Brian Conniff, President of the Middle East Broadcasting Networks.
“During the protests in Tahrir Square last year, Remi would go into the heart of the protests to capture the images of the people out in the streets. Through his photographs you see the resolve and strength of the protesters, as well as the sadness for the loss they endured. We had the privilege of using Remi’s remarkable photographs on-air as a part of Alhurra’s coverage of the Egyptian Revolution. Remi’s lens brought a new facet to Alhurra’s reporting. Remi was an amazing photographer and journalist, he will be missed,” Conniff said.
