New VOA Hausa Show Focuses on Northern Nigeria
Washington, D.C. — A new Voice of America Hausa Service radio show hits the airwaves in Nigeria Saturday.
“Dialogue,” a half-hour program, will include the latest breaking news from reporters around the region, analysis and round-table discussions of issues behind the headlines, commentaries from civic, religious, and community leaders, and the voices of ordinary people.
The new program, which is called “Tattauna” in the Hausa language, airs on shortwave at 9:30 PM local time. It will also be streamed on the VOA Hausa website and available on mobile devices in Nigeria.
Northern Nigeria has recently been the target of a series of deadly terror attacks blamed on the insurgent group Boko Haram that has called for Sharia in northern Nigeria.
VOA Hausa Service Chief Leo Keyen says the new radio program will “provide a place for the kind of serious dialogue that is essential to solve problems and build democratic institutions.”
Reporters from around West Africa will contribute to “Dialogue,” which is produced and broadcast from the VOA studios in Washington. VOA programs are broadcast to Nigeria on radio, television, the Internet, and mobile in both English and Hausa. Nigeria is VOA’s largest audience in Africa.
