Washington, DC – Voice of America (VOA) journalists are sharing their experience and expertise with students at Hampton University’s Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communication under a cooperative agreement with the Broadcasting Board of Governors.
VOA Executive Producer Jerry Brown recently visited Hampton University to mentor students in the program, and oversee production of a post-election special for a local cable TV outlet. The special is the outgrowth of an agreement, signed in November 2012, and paves the way for future collaboration between Hampton and BBG journalists on other multimedia productions.
This partnership stems in part from the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). It will bring Hampton interns to VOA, where BBG media professionals will provide them with a new window on the world of international journalism.
“It’s enriching to work together with Hampton’s students and faculty to produce quality programming and news reporting,” said VOA’s Brown, who has provided coaching for students, both in the studio and in the field.
Some bi-products of the collaboration include reporting on NASCAR’s minority development program, and work on Hampton University’s TV program Caldwell’s Café hosted by Earl Caldwell, writer-in-residence and a celebrated newspaper journalist who worked for the New York Times.
BBG plans to use this partnership as a model in creating ties with other universities in the United States.
