Afghan Women Journalists Visit the BBG
The Broadcasting Board of Governors today welcomed leading Afghan women journalists who are participating in the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitors Program. The group met with Lynne Weil, BBG’s Director of Communications and External Affairs; Spozhmai Maiwandi, Voice of America’s Senior News Analyst for South and Central Asia; and Masood Farivar, VOA’s Afghanistan Service Chief.
After a brief overview of U.S. international media, the group discussed the experiences of women in journalism in both the U.S. and Afghanistan, then visited the Afghanistan Service – many in the group are regular viewers and listeners. Their afternoon at the BBG was one of many stops at media organizations where they could discuss coverage of topics including human rights, press freedom, and the current state of media tradecraft, and exchange insights with American women in journalism.
