RFA Uyghur investigative project wins “Best of the Web” award
The min Best of the Web Awards competition “identifies exceptional work in the digital space, recognizing outstanding online, social media and mobile initiatives among publishers of digital content.”
RFA’s series, “Between Identity and Integration — The Uyghur diaspora in the West,” spanned a year and involved investigative reporting in four different European countries, traces the path of Uyghur émigrés over the decades from western China into Europe. Reporting, editing and design work were all done in-house on a very limited budget, with RFA designers creating a hub page including interactive maps, timelines and archival photos collected from families in Kayseri, Turkey.
A second investigative project by the Myanmar Service, on gold mining in that country, won an Honorable Mention in the same category. This series involved travel by our Yangon-based reporters to Kachin state in northern Myanmar, where they interviewed mine workers and took beautiful videos of the area, vividly capturing the hazards and impact of gold mining on communities on the Chinese border.
