Responsible journalism & countering disinformation in Latin America
A group of nine news directors from VOA Spanish Division affiliates in Latin American visited the USAGM Washington headquarters for a two-day training on responsible journalism, fact-checking and verification tools and ways to counter disinformation. Journalists participated in round-table discussions about media responsibilities, freedom of the press, and the role of women in the media crisis in the region. Participants met with the VOA Spanish Division, USAGM CEO John Lansing, VOA Director Amanda Bennett and USAGM Business Development & Training managers.
Participants honed their skills to identify, analyze, investigate, and report disinformation and fake news, and are now better equipped to identify and verify entities on social media platforms who work together to spread disinformation.
All participants benefited from meetings and discussions with the Global Engagement Center, Atlantic Council’s DRF Lab, InterAmerican Dialogue, National Endowment for Democracy, and FundaMedios on tools, tactics and strategies to counter state-sponsored disinformation in the region.
