News coverage: delivering news to television
The workshop sought to enhance television reporting and broadcasting skills of journalists who until six months ago had been working entirely within the radio platform. As a result, workshops were conducted on developing stories for TV news, elements of a TV news package, the role of a news program producer, television camera techniques, delivering pieces to camera, and conducting vox populi. Sessions on principles of reporting in a democracy, expanding audience through social media and using smartphones in reporting rounded out the seminar. Two groups of 16 and 15-journalists from the Voice of America’s affiliate station, Citi TV were in attendance for the two-day workshop.
Each two-day program included eight sessions: An Overview of Journalism Principles, Developing Stories, Elements of a TV News Package, The Role of the Producer, Practical Camera Techniques, Delivering Pieces to Camera (Stand-ups), Conducting Vox Pop interviews, and Using Digital Media, Social Platforms and the Smart Phone to Expand Audience. Participants created WhatsApp and Facebook group pages to communicate with each other.
