Mandela Washington Fellow at USAGM’s Office of Technology, Services & Innovation
Beryl Birgitta Payett from Seychelles, participant of Mandela Washington Fellowship for young African leaders, spent one month at USAGM, learning and understanding the role and responsibilities of several organizations within the Broadcasting and Telecommunications industry and how their work interrelates with USAGM. Gerhard Straub, Beryl’s supervisor at USAGM/TSI, asked her to observe USAGM’s current FM Remote Monitoring (FRM) network and provide recommendations on of how to increase the network’s efficiency and ensure its sustainability. She toured USAGM/VOA broadcast operations, attended weekly staff meetings of the Broadcast Technologies Division and a monthly management meeting for the Office of Technology, Services and Innovation (TSI). Ms Payett was also briefed about NAB, the digital radio and television standards and technologies in the United States, and discussed the relationship between FCC, the broadcasters and NAB.
