VOA’s midwest correspondent wins Religion News Association award
Washington, D.C. — Voice of America’s Midwest correspondent, Kane Farabaugh, received an award for excellence at the Religion News Association’s 70th annual awards banquet in Las Vegas on September 21.
Farabaugh received first place in the TV National Network/Cable News category for his report, Tahera’s Ameican Hijab. The segment is an account of Tahera Rahman, the first full-time broadcast television news reporter in the United States to wear the traditional Muslim headscarf, also known as the hijab, on air. Rahman works at WHBF-TV in the Quad Cities, a region of five cities in northwestern Illinois and southeastern Iowa.
“I’m very proud of the unique way our reporters present America’s story to the world,” said VOA Director, Amanda Bennett. “I’m also very pleased that reports such as the story of Tahera Rahman, that showcase America’s diversity, are recognized for their excellence by organizations like the RNA.”
The Religion News Association (RNA) is the premier journalism association for people who write about religion in the news media, with the goal of equipping journalists throughout the world with the tools and resources they need to cover religion with balance, accuracy and insight.
