Watercolor is the most spontaneous and portable of painting mediums, and it is often associated with youth and movement. The technique is fitting, therefore, in this tribute to three young journalists — Sabawoon Kakar, Abadullah Hananzai and Maharram Durrani — who were known for their energy, activity, and professional optimism.
Sabawoon Kakar, 30, was a key member of Radio Free Afghanistan’s video team, and he died one day before his fifth anniversary as a RFE/RL journalist.
Abadullah Hananzai, 26, had been working on an anti-narcotics project at RFE/RL’s Radio Free Afghanistan since October 2016.
Maharram Durrani, 28, had just been hired by RFE/RL and was on her way to a training session at the Kabul bureau. May 15 would have been her first day.
