Latin America: Freedom of Press during COVID-19
Organized by USAGM and IREX, more than 40 journalists were invited to a 90-minute talk to discuss the effects of coverage, misinformation, teleworking, and the role of women journalists during the COVID-19.
For many journalists and producers in the Latin America region, the pandemic affected their jobs, from teleworking to encounter new protocols to obtain government health information.
Some governments toughened their norms or laws for access to information. In some cases, government reports denied the number of death or make difficult for journalists to have access to hospitals to interview medical staff.
Beyond the intensity of reporting on the virus, journalists must also contend with battling misinformation, disinformation and rumors.
The conversation with journalist across Latin America was held virtually on the Microsoft Teams platform on April 6th, 2021.
