Media response to disinformation and elections in Europe, Asia and Africa
Free elections are the cornerstone of democracy, yet quite often candidates, political parties and interest groups are using disinformation strategies to sway the results one way or another. Misleading information or outright lies are not uncommon in election cycles across the globe. Voters in Europe, Asia, and Africa alike would find it hard to get verified and true information before they go to the polling booth, while most will not even try to fact-check political actors.
This panel discussion focused on how media counters disinformation that targets democratic institutions, leaders and elections around the world, and what journalists do to help their audience bridge political divisions and seek true facts beyond the glitter of emotional and misleading content.
