Washington, D.C. —  Radio Free Asia’s (RFA) digital brand 歪脑 | WHYNOT was named a winner of a National Murrow Award by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). Its video report Is China Polluting North Carolina with Hog Waste?, which follows activists fighting hog waste pollution in North Carolina at a Chinese-owned meat processing plant, won in the Investigative Reporting category for Small Digital Organization.

“All credit for this prestigious recognition goes to the fantastic 歪脑 | WHYNOT team,” said RFA Executive Editor Min Mitchell. “Their riveting storytelling shines a light on underreported topics such as the human and environmental cost of Chinese-run industrial operations on U.S. soil. 歪脑 | WHYNOT’s winning project is part of a three-episode docu-series “Caught in the Crossfire” that investigates the ordinary people impacted by the U.S.-China big-power rivalry. This award marks the sixth instance 歪脑 | WHYNOT has won this year, having earned top prizes at this year’s SOPA awards, Telly awards, Human Rights Press Awards, and New York Festivals.

The winners were announced last night via virtual webcast and will be honored at the Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala in New York City on October 9th. Launched in 1971, the Edward R. Murrow Awards honor outstanding achievements in digital and broadcast journalism.
