Peru: Solutions journalism for reporting nature crimes
Second training in a two-year project on Combatting Nature Crimes in Lima, Peru.
From October 11 to 13, 2023, USAGM’s Business Development hosted the second training session as part of a two-year project focused on combatting nature crimes. This intensive workshop, sponsored by the U.S. State Department, provided participants with insights from experts on the principles and practical implementation of ‘Solution Journalism’ when addressing nature crimes.
The Solution Journalism program placed a strong emphasis on reporting about criminal activities related to logging, mining, wildlife trade, land conversion, and other illicit practices, including crimes associated with fishing on regional, national, and international scales.
With over 27 participants hailing from various regions of Peru, the course also equipped attendees with valuable tools, including ‘Digital Security,’ ‘Utilizing Social Media to Combat Nature Crimes,’ and ‘Legal Aspects.’
Throughout the three-day workshop, participants gained hands-on experience in producing videos using their phones and learned effective methods for sharing these videos.
