Office of Cuba Broadcasting wins three Emmys, marking a historic award season for its Cuba-based correspondents
MIAMI, FL — On December 7, the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (OCB) won three Emmy Awards at the 2024 ceremony of the Suncoast Region of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in Jacksonville, Florida. The award is considered the pinnacle of excellence in reporting and broadcasting in the Southeast region of the U.S., and OCB is delighted to applaud them.
This year’s OCB Emmy recipients are notable in that each reporting team included at least one Cuba-based correspondent. In the “Human Interest” category, on-island contributor Rolando Rodriguez Lobaina collaborated with Ricardo Quintana and Jesus Acosta on the news story “Francisco el Manisero,” following a day in the life of a peanut vendor and Cuban immigrant on the streets of Miami. The same team also won in the “Single News, Religion” category for their story “Immigrantes de Fe” (Immigrants of Faith), a story of a Christian congregation’s arduous journey to escape harassment and persecution in Cuba.
Cuba-based contributors to OCB’s web series, Ser Trans, Denay Delgado Morera and Kiriam Gutierrez won the Emmy in the “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” category, along with OCB talent Magdiel Aspillaga, Joe Cardona, Jesus Acosta, Mayle Gonzalez, Orelvys Cabrera and Hernando Barrera. The series uncovers the history of Cuba’s trans community, who was condemned into forced labor in the 1960s, as well as the community’s current challenges in an era when same-sex marriage is legal, but LGBTIQ+ activism is still criminalized.
“This year’s wins mark a historic achievement,” said OCB Director Sylvia Rosabal. “This is the first time that journalists who work and live within the repressive Cuban regime have shared the recognition alongside their U.S.-based OCB colleagues. These awards are truly the result of extraordinary teamwork that supersedes physical barriers and international borders.”
OCB received eight Emmy nominations this year – a record for the organization. With its 2024 wins, OCB has won seven Emmy Awards in the past two years.
