USAGM Best Practices
Virtual workshop on best practices and ethical behavior for Latin American journalists
The USAGM Business Development team and Martí Noticias hosted a virtual workshop on December 9, 2024, focusing on best practices and ethical behavior for journalists.
Regional Marketing Officer Iscar Blanco and Hector Manuel Castro from the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (OCB) Standards & Practices led the two-hour training, which over 26 participants attended. The group included directors, producers, and news presenters who contributed to Martí Noticias’ “Noticias de Cuba” segment, presented by Ricardo Espinosa.
Journalists from countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela received training on key topics, including fairness, objectivity, balance, sourcing, bias, breaking news coverage, conducting interviews, attribution, and using drones for reporting.
The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, where participants spent over an hour discussing the history of OCB, the role of artificial intelligence, and the future of journalism.
This workshop marks one of the first virtual meetings organized by the Office of Marketing and Training. More sessions are planned for 2025.
