National Association of Hispanic Journalists honors Office of Cuba Broadcasting Director Sylvia Rosabal
MIAMI, FL — During its inaugural Execelencia Awards, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) honored Office of Cuba Broadcasting (OCB) Director Sylvia Rosabal with its Legacy Award, celebrating her significant contributions to the Hispanic community. NAHJ is a charitable organization dedicated to the recognition and advancement of Hispanic students, professionals and educators in journalism. Its annual Excelencia Awards honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to this cause.
Before taking the helm at OCB in 2021, Rosabal spent three decades working across Spanish-language networks Telemundo and Univision, where she paved her way to leadership and broke barriers, creating opportunities for other journalists of color.
Throughout her career, she has fostered collaboration among journalists from different specialties and championed diversity in media.
As OCB director, Rosabal significantly expanded OCB’s reach to the Cuban people, achieving historic audience numbers. She also revolutionized OCB’s hiring practices to promote equity and inclusion. ”Rosabal’s dedication to creating environments where everyone is seen and heard underscores her legacy as a trailblazer in journalism,” said NAHJ in a statement. Her approach “has literally transformed the system.”
U.S. Agency for Global Media CEO Amanda Bennett applauded NAHJ for the recognition. “Sylvia embodies all the virtues of this award, and has been a changemaker at OCB since her first day in 2021,” said Bennett. “She hired the first-ever Standards and Best Practices Editor for the Martís, and oversaw sweeping programmatic and management changes.” There is no one more deserving of this honor. Congratulations, Sylvia!”
Rosabal has previously received the Edward R. Murrow Award, eight News and Documentary Emmys, and was listed among People en Español’s “25 Most Powerful Women.”
