In Burma, BBG Officials Meet With President Thein Sein, Aung San Suu Kyi
On the heels of President Obama’s historic trip to Burma in November, and as a follow-up to BBG-wide technical advisory committee meetings, three BBG Governors went to Burma on a trip organized and accompanied by Radio Free Asia (RFA) President Libby Liu and joined by VOA Director David Ensor. The trip came at a key time in Burmese history, as the government gradually transitions to democracy.
BBG Board members Michael Meehan, Susan McCue and Victor Ashe met with top government officials – including a 90-minute discussion with Burmese President Thein Sein – visited democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in her home, and spoke with Burma-based journalists, including staff and stringers for RFA and Voice of America in both Rangoon and Naypyidaw. The group also met with Parliamentary Speaker Shwe Mann, Ministry of Information officials, private citizens and private media company officials to expand the reach of United States international broadcasting.
Also during the trip, Ashe, Meehan, McCue and Liu met with Aung San Suu Kyi at her home in Naypyidaw, where they discussed the changes taking place in Burma.
