Arab-American Heritage Month on Alhurra
April was Arab-American Heritage Month, and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks celebrated by highlighting the achievements and contributions of Arab-Americans in the fields of politics, art, science and technology.
Alhurra’s Almajalla featured influential Arab-Americans in the movie and fashion industries. The show interviewed Syrian-American Hollywood director Malek Akkad, who is the CEO and Chairman of Trancas Films and best known for his work on the Halloween series of horror films. The show also featured the cast of the movie Adeela, a film created with the goal of changing the negative misconceptions that Arab and Muslim Americans face in the media today. Almajalla also aired profiles on Rami Kashou, a Palestinian- American fashion designer, and Syrian-American pianist Malek Jandali, whose parents were brutally assaulted in Syria.
One of the most recognizable voices in American radio, Casey Kasem, was featured by MBN Digital.
Al Youm also celebrated the month by telling stories of successful Arab-Americans, including a group of leading Arab NASA scientists. The program also featured Mona Ghanem, a successful business woman leading humanitarian efforts to help Syrian children in refugee camps.
In addition to regular programming, Alhurra aired a series of original and acquired documentaries such as The Americans II: The Arab-Americans series, Arab-American Stories, Fordson: Faith, Fasting, Football and On the Road in America.
Alhurra also covered the many Arab-American heritage events in Washington and across the US, such as the American Task Force for Lebanon Gala Awards Dinner and the Arab-American Institute Foundation’s 15th Annual Kahlil Gibran dinner.
