Alhurra Television’s Street Pulse won the CINE Special Jury award for the best investigative report from 2013, it was announced today. The documentary/magazine program was honored in the “Televised News Division—Investigative Reporting” category for its gripping episode addressing the dangers of working in the Egyptian quarries located in El Minya. The Street Pulse episode showed how adults and child laborers risk serious injury or death from rock cutting machines, respiratory ailments from stone dust, and intense heat in order to support their families.  This represents the second tier of voting for CINE’s top prize.

“This episode is especially poignant, bringing attention to the hazardous, and sometimes deadly work of these Egyptian quarry workers. Winning the CINE Golden Eagle earlier this year, and now the Special Jury prize is a testament to the excellent and dedicated work of the Street Pulse team,” stated MBN President Brian Conniff. MBN manages and operates Alhurra Television.

The Council on International Nontheatrical Events (CINE) Special Jury Awards are presented to the top three televised series and the best CINE Golden Eagle Award-winning production in each CINE Competition category from the previous calendar year, as selected by CINE’s Board of Directors. Other Golden Eagle winners in the investigative reporting category include ABC, MSNBC, Al Jazeera English and Univision.

Alhurra is operated by the non-profit corporation “The Middle East Broadcasting Networks, Inc.” (MBN). MBN is financed by the U.S. Government through a grant from the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), an independent federal agency.  The BBG provides oversight and serves as a firewall to protect the professional independence and integrity of the broadcasters.
