The workshop was organized and coordinated by the U.S. Embassy in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, and held at the Embassy Compound, March 3-4, 2014, 9 AM-5PM. The workshop training sessions focused on:
• Ethical & Responsible Reporting
• Investigative Journalism
• Disaster Preparedness
• Gender Equality
• Use of New Media
PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The workshop participants created a new Facebook journalistic community “PNG Journalists Online.” Currently, there are 304 members in that new FB journalistic community.
By the end of the workshop, each journalist came up with a story idea they’d like to work on that can be pitched to their media organizations. The project ideas were presented to and discussed with the whole group. Everyone had a chance to give their peers advice and tips to help plan, produce and write the stories.
After the workshop, participants continued to help each other by advising and providing references and sources, and commenting on the produced and published stories that were posted or linked to PNG Journalists Online. “Thank you so much for facilitating such an excellent workshop and bringing to light so many things that we can do to change how journalism is perceived here in PNG. …What you do is amazing, and all the experience and knowledge that you brought to us last week has made a huge difference,” said Urith Toa in her post to PNG Journalists Online.
