USAGM condemns killing of RFE/RL journalist in Afghanistan
Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) condemned the November 12 car bombing in Afghanistan that killed Mohammad Ilyas Dayee, a journalist with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), and injured three others.
“We are both saddened and incensed to learn of the death of Mohammad Ilyas Dayee, who reported for RFE/RL’s Radio Free Afghanistan, known locally as Radio Azadi. This was a cowardly act and an assault on the universal principle of freedom of expression,” USAGM CEO Michael Pack said. “We offer our deepest condolences to Dayee’s family, and call for the perpetrators to be held accountable.”
The 33-year-old Dayee was killed when a bomb attached to his vehicle exploded. Dayee’s brother and two others, including a child, were also injured in the blast. Dayee is survived by his wife and 1.5-year-old daughter.
USAGM stands fully committed to supporting and protecting its journalists, a number of whom work in the world’s most dangerous regions and media-repressive environments. “Our commitment to the people of Afghanistan and to their country’s news media remains resolute,” CEO Pack said
