Online battlefields: Experiences of Iranian women journalists
The Committee to Protect Journalists and Article 19 present a CSW66 parallel event, “Online battlefields: Experiences of Iranian women journalists”
The panel, moderated by CPJ Senior Researcher Yeganeh Rezaian, will feature Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist Golnaz Esfandiari, New York Times reporter Farnaz Fassihi, and Paulina Gutiérrez, legal officer for Article 19’s law and policy team.
For Iranian women journalists of the diaspora, the internet can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, online spaces enable the dissemination of critical reporting. On the other, women journalists increasingly and disproportionately face gender-based harassment and smear campaigns and are often targeted as a result of speaking out against government abuses, or social issues. Contextualizing these threats within recent research and at a time when online spaces are more essential, participants will discuss the experiences of Iranian women journalists, and explore what steps can be taken to better protect and support them in carrying out their work.
