Peru: Combating Nature Crimes
The USAGM Office of Business Development and the U.S. Department of State offered a three-day seminar to environmental journalists and editors in Lima, Peru, on journalistic techniques to combat nature crimes such as illegal logging, wildlife trafficking, illegal mining, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in regional, national, and international contexts.
Over the course of the training, held from October 26-28, 2022, the journalists who came from different parts of Peru, listened to experts on applicable environmental laws and best practices for how to stay safe while covering these issues. They also learned research and writing techniques including market strategies to work together to address those issues.
As part of the course, journalists met with experts to discuss environmental issues such as environmental law, technology to prevent crimes against nature, reforestation, and education.
