Ukrainian Journalists at War – a discussion with media experts
World Press Freedom Day at IREX
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine forever changed the media landscape in the country. Thousands of Ukrainian journalists had to become war correspondents overnight, and according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 13 journalists have already been killed in the war so far. Despite the challenges, journalists in Ukraine continue to cover the invasion and provide crucial information to their people, despite experiencing the impacts of war themselves.
On May 4, IREX and the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) hosted a unique and comprehensive look at how Ukrainian media have adjusted to covering the war in its first year. Ukrainian Service Chiefs from Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and the Chief Editor of UA:Chernihiv discussed their experiences working to cut through the rumors and disinformation to provide fact-based, reliable news and information.
