Statement: World Press Freedom Day
Today, on World Press Freedom Day, I want to recognize the importance of a free press and of the brave journalists who work in environments where this is challenged.
As the CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, I have witnessed how restrictions on a free and open press keep essential information from getting to those who need it most. But I have a core belief: information matters.
That’s why, despite these restrictions, every day we provide accurate, objective, and professional news and information to audiences around the world.
Censorship comes in many forms. Governments may shut down the internet in their country or impose onerous licensing requirements; they may jam transmissions or arrest journalists on trumped-up charges. They may physically threaten journalists or their loved ones. Or even worse.
But as I said, information matters. And we will continue to inform, engage, and connect people around the world in support of freedom and democracy, on this day and every day.
