Solutions Journalism Series – Artificial Intelligence (UZ)
Twenty-one journalists and bloggers from leading media outlets completed the second training course in USAGM’s Solution Journalism series in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, which focused on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism. The first workshop of this series covered corruption, including fact-checking and multimedia verification, storytelling techniques, analytical and investigative skills, and best practices.
The sessions were led by longtime trainer Oleg Khomenok and VOA Uzbek Service Editor Navbahor Imamova, with two other prominent guest instructors who conducted extensive in-person and virtual sessions for the trainees.
The training in the Uzbek capital also featured a field trip to the International Institute for Central Asia (IICA) where the trainees learned about studies in Central Asia – Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan. Launched in 2021 by the Uzbek government, IICA aims to serve as a mechanism to promote regional cooperation, connectivity, and unity.
In an informal and candid discussion with IICA Director Ambassador Javlon Vakhabov (former ambassador to the U.S.) and his advisors, Uzbekistan’s former ministers and deputy prime ministers of foreign affairs and agriculture, veteran diplomats, and former presidential advisors—the participants gained valuable insights into IICA’s work. The institute focuses on several critical areas of interest to both the Uzbek public and the international community: the political and social dynamics of Central Asia; security and stability in the region; economic resilience, regional connectivity, foreign investment, and transportation networks; water management, climate change, and environmental issues; preservation of historical and cultural heritage, as well as the promotion of humanitarian studies, and engagement within the framework of C5+1.
The Solution Journalism Series is an interagency agreement between USAGM and the U.S. State Department to provide media assistance to Uzbekistan.
