The Mobile Apps team from ODDI has launched feature phone apps to further expand the reach of all BBG entities with more than 80 language services around the world.
These Java-based applications are built for very low-end or “feature” phones, especially the old Nokia phone that still have a stronghold in our African, Middle East and Asian markets. The apps are build using technology from BiNu, a popular caching and proxy service, that deliver content faster to very low tech and low bandwidth communities who often don’t have phones equipped with modern or fast-performing web browsers. For example, Wikipedia is 10x faster on the Binu platform than their Wikipedia-optimized mobile website. The BBG feature phone app content is limited to text and photos but in these markets and with limited bandwidth that’s a great place to start.
